One-liner: Narrative is a browser-based AI video editor where the editing surface is a chat: upload footage, describe what you want (“a 15-second reel of the best rides, title at the start, music under it”), and the agent assembles clips on a standard timeline you can still open and adjust manually. It launched on Product Hunt the week of September 14, 2026. Facts below were checked against usenarrative.ai and the Product Hunt listing on 2026-09-18.
Verified facts (checked 2026-09-18)
| Attribute | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | AI-first video editor: describe edits in natural language, refine through chat, with the result delivered as clips on an editable timeline | Official usenarrative.ai |
| How edits work | The agent reads the transcript and footage, performs the edit, then reports what it did (e.g. which clips it chose and where title/music sit); example shown on the homepage cost 9.5 credits for one turn | Official site editor demo |
| Model tiers | Fast (“quick cuts and small changes”), Balanced (“most edits, most of the time”), Max (“long footage, hard briefs”); all tiers including Max are available on every paid plan | Official site |
| Versioning | Every chat turn is saved as a named version (demo shows v9–v12: framing change, trim, clip edits); any version can be restored | Official site |
| Reframing | Reformat 16:9 → 9:16, 1:1, or 4:5 by request; the demo shows two speakers kept and stacked in a vertical frame | Official site |
| Other in-chat actions | Cut to the beat, build a trailer, pull every goal in order, remove filler words (“remove the ums”), add captions, animated titles, music, sound effects, transitions, custom motion graphics, reference-video style matching and reusable style guides | Official site + Product Hunt listing |
| Rendering / storage | Narrative handles rendering and cloud storage; 4K renders with no watermark on every plan | Official site |
| Entry plan | $20/month billed monthly: 2,000 AI credits, 10 projects/month, 100 GB footage, all model tiers, one year of version history | Official site pricing |
| Pro | $40/month billed monthly (marked most popular): 4,000 credits, 30 projects/month, 500 GB | Official site pricing |
| Team-scale plan | $100/month billed monthly: 10,000 credits, unlimited projects, unmetered renders with priority queue, 1 TB, priority support | Official site pricing |
| Trial | Every plan starts with a 3-day trial; “cancel any time.” No permanent free plan is published — the trial is the only free window | Official site pricing |
| Launch offer | Product Hunt code PRODUCTHUNT for 500 extra credits | Maker’s Product Hunt launch comment |
| Team | Three builders, each reporting 10+ years of video editing; previously built AI video systems for sports organizations for about 18 months | Maker launch post |
| Claimed use cases | Wedding highlight films, podcast clips, sports match highlights, product/unboxing demos, launch videos, UGC; the team states their own launch video was made entirely in Narrative | Official site + Product Hunt |
| Social proof shown | Four named testimonials on the homepage (wedding filmmaker, podcast producer, sports media lead, product marketing); independent third-party reviews were not available at launch | Official site |
| Platform | Web app (built on Vercel per the Product Hunt “built with” panel) | Product Hunt |
This is an official-information entry: we have not run our own footage through Narrative, so there is no score.
What makes it different from “type a prompt, get a video”
There are now many tools that turn a prompt into a generated clip. Narrative is positioned one notch closer to traditional editing: it works on your uploaded footage, and its output is a genuine multi-track timeline (the homepage embeds a live, scrubbable editor, not a screenshot) with clips, dialogue tracks, music, and graphics you can move yourself. Two architectural choices stand out.
First, every chat turn is a version. “Tighter. Thirty seconds,” “warm it up,” “put the title back at the end” each produce a restorable snapshot, which answers the biggest fear with AI editors — one bad instruction wrecking a cut you liked. Second, the chat has access to the transcript, which is what makes requests like “start on the best line,” “remove the ums,” or “every goal, in order” addressable at all; it is editing from what was said, not guessing at pixels. Reference-video style matching and saved style guides target the consistency problem that makes most one-prompt edits look one-off.
Where to stay honest
- No permanent free tier. The only free window is a 3-day trial — short for evaluating an editor against a backlog of footage. Plan to test with a real project ready to go.
- Credits are a black box until you use them. The site shows one turn at 9.5 credits but publishes no full price list of operations (transcription, Max-tier cuts, motion graphics may differ). Whether 2,000 credits means five edits or fifty is unknowable from the pricing page; budget for the first month to be a calibration month.
- Monthly-only billing at launch — no annual discount is offered.
- Launch-week product, tiny team. Three makers, no independent reviews yet, and the testimonials on the site are vendor-published. The sports-organization history is claimed, not independently documented.
- Don’t confuse it with narrative.so — that is an established AI photo-culling product for photographers (Lite from $10/month). This is usenarrative.ai, the video editor.
- Long-form complexity is unverified. Chat-driven editing is easiest to demonstrate on highlight reels and vertical clips; dense multi-layer edits with precise color work are still the domain of Premiere or DaVinci Resolve.
Who it’s for
- Podcasters and creators who regularly cut long recordings into short clips and want transcript-aware selection plus auto-captions
- Wedding/event editors and small content teams producing highlight reels where the brief is describable in sentences
- Marketers making product demos or UGC-style videos without learning Premiere or After Effects
- Anyone who liked one-prompt video outputs but needs an editable timeline and version safety
It also earns a place on our best AI tools for creators list; if you are comparing approaches, the closest alternatives named at launch are Descript (text-based editing), OpusClip (one-click long-to-shorts), CapCut (template-driven), and Augie Studio.
Who it’s not for
- Editors who need proven stability and client-grade reliability — wait for independent post-launch reviews
- Color graders and VFX-heavy workflows that need keyframe-level control
- Zero-budget users: with only a 3-day trial, a genuinely free tool (CapCut’s free tier, or open-source editors) is the safer starting point
