Each line is the vendor’s own wording, split from the price capture checked on 2026-10-20. Nothing here is rounded, converted or re-worded — the full sentences stay in the review below. Lines that carry only a price continue the plan named on the line above, in the vendor’s own order.

One-liner: Dictantor is a private voice-notebook for iPhone, Apple Watch, and Mac: record a meeting or a spoken idea, get a transcript generated on your own device, search across everything you’ve said, and export audio or text — with no sign-up, no cloud storage of your recordings, and no subscription.
Verified facts (checked 2026-09-09)
| Attribute | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free; “No subscription required” stated explicitly. Re-checked 2026-10-20: official site still lists no price, and the iTunes Search API returns the app at Free, version 1.4, updated 2026-09-23 | Official site + App Store listing, re-checked 2026-10-20 |
| Account | None required; “no sign-up” is a listed feature | Official site, same day |
| Transcription | On-device on iPhone; “does not send your audio to an external transcription service” | App Store listing, checked same day |
| Apps | iPhone, Apple Watch (record from watch face), Mac; iCloud sync is optional and requires the Mac companion app (“supported recordings can sync through your private iCloud account”) | App Store + official site |
| AI summaries | Optional “Insights” (summary, key takeaways, action items) only on compatible devices with Apple Intelligence enabled | Official site + App Store listing |
| Offline | Recording, transcription, playback, search, export work offline | App Store listing |
| Privacy label | “Data Not Collected” per developer’s App Store declaration; confirmed via listing metadata and matching copy on the official site, but the live regional App Store page is the source of truth (we could not load the US storefront directly from our network location) | App Store listing (developer-declared, not Apple-verified) |
| Launch buzz | Product Hunt launch day: Day Rank #8 with 121 votes when snapshotted at 06:37 UTC on 2026-09-09; launch-day rankings move throughout the day, so treat the exact number as point-in-time rather than a final placement | Product Hunt launch page, snapshot 2026-09-09 06:37 UTC |
This is an official-information entry. We have not used Dictantor in real meetings for two weeks, so there is no score — every claim above comes from the developer’s own pages as fetched on 2026-09-09.
Why a free, local app is interesting in a subscription category
The AI meeting-notes and voice-note market is built on per-seat subscriptions: Otter Pro, Granola Business, Fireflies — all in the $10–$20/user/month band, all because cloud transcription costs the vendor money per minute. Dictantor removes that cost structure by running Whisper-class transcription on the phone itself, and the result is a product with no billing page at all.
The official site is blunt about the positioning: “The recording stays yours” — no account, no tracking, no cloud storage of your recordings or transcripts. For people who record genuinely sensitive conversations — therapy sessions, journalism interviews, doctor appointments, confidential 1:1s — “the audio never leaves my device” is not a feature, it’s the whole buying decision.
Where the free model gets honest limits
The developer does not hide the constraints, and neither will we:
- Summaries are Apple’s, not Dictantor’s. The “Insights” layer (summary, takeaways, action items) only runs when Apple Intelligence is available and enabled on a compatible device. Without it you get transcripts and search, not AI condensation.
- Apple-only — and European-language only for now. There is no Android version; iPhone + Apple Watch + Mac, syncing optionally through iCloud with the Mac companion app. On-device transcription currently covers about 25 European languages — Chinese and Japanese are not supported yet (Japanese is on the developer’s roadmap). The app requires iOS 26. If your team lives on Windows or Android, or records in Mandarin, this is a non-starter today.
- Speaker diarization claims are modest. The Mac update adds color-coded transcript sections to distinguish your voice from others’ — the developer openly says separation is still basic: it tells you apart from everyone else, and overlapping speech remains hard. Cloud rivals with multi-speaker labeling for a ten-person meeting still do that better.
- “Data Not Collected” is developer-declared. Apple’s listing flags this practice as unverified by Apple. It matches the local-first architecture, but it’s a trust statement, not an audit.
Who it’s for
- Solo recordists — capturing ideas, lectures, interviews, personal reflections — who don’t want another $15/month subscription for transcription
- Privacy-sensitive recorders — journalists, clinicians, anyone who can’t send audio through a third-party cloud
- Apple Watch users who want one-tap recording from the watch face with the phone staying in a pocket
- Not for teams needing shared meeting libraries, CRM integrations, or bot-free Zoom recording for 20-person standups — that’s the subscription tools’ territory
Caveats
- Transcription quality and language coverage depend on Apple’s on-device models; expect them to trail large cloud transcription engines on accents and noisy audio (the listing itself says results vary with device, language, speech clarity, and audio quality).
- The site mentions Dictantor for Mac but we could not confirm a published Mac download or version history from the mobile pages alone; treat Mac availability as stated-but-thin-evidence.
- One independent 2026 article frames it as “the free note-taker that skips AI transcription by design” — a mischaracterization of the on-device transcription the developer explicitly documents, but a sign the product’s messaging is still getting sorted out externally.
