One-liner: GenOffice is a free, Apache-2.0 desktop office suite from
Genspark that opens and saves real Microsoft .docx, .xlsx and .pptx
files byte-for-byte, adds six editors (Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDF, HTML,
Markdown) with an AI panel in each, and then exposes all of it three ways:
a GUI, a genoffice command line, and an MCP server your coding agent can
drive.

The one number that matters most
Stars are the cheap metric here. The release feed is the expensive one: 111,497 real installer downloads across 31 releases in under two months, with Windows taking 62% of them and 10 releases shipped in the last 30 days. For a project whose first tagged release was 2026-08-02, that is the download curve of something people actually installed, not just bookmarked. The single latest release (v0.11.0) alone accounts for 14,323 downloads.
What it actually is
Seven Electron apps sharing one engine layer of pure TypeScript packages (plus a Rust sidecar for the spreadsheet engine). The design decision that matters is in the README’s own pipeline sketch: the original file is always the source of truth, edits are applied as narrow patches to the parsed XML block tree, and on save the untouched blocks keep their original bytes while only dirty blocks are re-serialized. That is why the README can claim “documents keep working in Word, Excel and PowerPoint” — it is a structural property of the save path, not a promise.
The AI is deliberately reviewable rather than magical: tracked changes in Docs, live formulas and charts in Sheets, slides drawn onto the canvas, and every AI turn leaves a snapshot you can roll back.
Three ways to drive it
- The apps. Six editors plus a tabbed shell.
- The CLI.
genofficedoes inspect/convert/create/read/edit on Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, Markdown and HTML headlessly, on the same engines, with no separate runtime to install. - MCP. Every
genofficecommand is also an MCP tool.genoffice mcpis stdio;genoffice mcp --httpturns the same tool set into a Streamable HTTP server for clients on other machines (--host 0.0.0.0opens it to the network,--tokenprotects it). The README is explicit that files travel with the calls on the HTTP path (PUT /files/<name>uploads, everyfileparameter takes an http(s) URL).
The README also states the privacy boundary plainly: no model call happens
inside genoffice — the agent does the thinking, the CLI does the file
work. And on the desktop path only search and media leave the machine,
which is what makes BYOK a real answer rather than a checkbox.
The catches
- “Free” covers the apps, not necessarily the AI. GenOffice itself has no paid tier. But the no-key path routes model calls through the Genspark proxy and spends Genspark credits, and genspark.ai/pricing sits behind a Microsoft B2C login wall — an unauthenticated fetch today returns the sign-in page, so no credit price is verifiable from outside. If you care about what the AI costs, bring your own key: the README lists Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, Doubao, MiniMax, Grok, Mistral, OpenRouter, Requesty, Opper, Cheaper Inference and OpenCode Zen/Go, plus a custom slot for any OpenAI-compatible endpoint including local servers.
- Not fully Apache-2.0. The README’s license section: Apache-2.0 “with
one exception: the
ee/directory is reserved for future enterprise modules and is covered by the GenOffice Enterprise License.” The Apache license’s own section 6 does not grant those rights. The GenOffice and Genspark names and logos are trademarks of Mainfunc, Inc., and the README says forks should use their own branding. - It is two months old. v0.11.0 is a pre-1.0 version number, and the repository’s own release notes read like a bug-fix changelog with credited community reporters — which is a good sign for responsiveness and a clear signal that the editors are still converging on Word parity. Two concrete gaps third parties flagged in August: it’s Electron rather than native, so it is a noticeably heavier download than a 100MB-class native suite, and it was Mac/Windows-only until Linux builds landed on 2026-08-09 (issue #29 closed as shipped; every release since v0.6.13 ships deb, rpm and AppImage). Both claims are now stale in GenOffice’s favour — check the release assets rather than the August reviews.
- The agent-facing surface is young too. 49 open PRs against 154 open
issues, with active PRs still adding basics (right-to-left UI chrome,
File > Printin Sheets). The MCP server is a documented, versioned part of the repo rather than a side project, but expect churn in tool names.
Who should care
- People who need real Office files without a subscription. The byte-preserving save path is the actual differentiator; most “open-source office” projects convert to their own format and lose the original.
- Agent builders. A CLI + MCP server that produces genuine
.pptxand.docxon your own machine is a different category from “ask an LLM for a Markdown outline and paste it into a deck”. The README ships a worked example of Claude Code building an eight-slide deck throughgenoffice mcp. - Teams standardizing on Apache-2.0 with BYOK — with the
ee/carve-out read first. - Everyone else: LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE remain the safer default for a machine you cannot afford to debug. GenOffice is the one to watch.
